After 20 years treating trauma, I began seeing the same neurological signatures in patients who had never experienced a single traumatic event. Their only exposure was a screen.
— Eugene Lipov, MD
Board-Certified Anesthesiologist | Pain Physician | Pioneer of the Stellate Ganglion Block
Oxford University Press named “brain rot” Word of the Year in 2024. Most people laughed. I didn’t.
Because what I was seeing in my clinic — and what is now appearing in peer-reviewed research — is not funny. It is a measurable, biological event happening at a population scale.
People with the highest smartphone use are showing:
Measurable grey matter reduction in regions governing attention, memory, and emotional regulation
Chronic disruption of slow-wave and REM sleep — the stages essential for physical restoration and cognitive function
Poor sleep from screen exposure raises inflammatory markers linked to heart attack, stroke, and cognitive decline
Declining vocabulary, reduced reading comprehension, and weakened capacity for sustained linear thought
A chronically activated sympathetic nervous system that cannot fully rest — the same state seen in trauma patients
Emerging epigenetic data suggests chronic digital stress may age the brain faster than chronological age predicts
This is not a digital detox book.
Most books in this space tell you to put your phone down. Dumb Is Smarter tells you what happens in your brain when you don’t — and builds the scientific case for why the solution is not willpower. It is understanding.
Drawing on two decades of clinical experience treating trauma, cutting-edge neuroscience, epigenetic aging research, and the emerging global movement of people reclaiming their attention, Dr. Lipov maps the crisis from the inside out.
What you will understand after reading this book:

Born in the Ukrainian SSR and raised in Chicago, Dr. Eugene Lipov completed his MD at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and advanced anesthesiology training at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Rush University Medical Center.
A board-certified anesthesiologist and interventional pain specialist with more than 28 years of clinical experience, he is Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of The Stella Center and founder of Erase PTSD Now. In 2003 he treated his first patient with the stellate ganglion block for menopausal hot flashes — a breast cancer survivor with no other options — and in 2007 pioneered its use for post-traumatic stress disorder, testifying before the U.S. House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs in 2010.
His research has been published in Lancet Oncology, Biological Psychiatry, Military Medicine, The Lancet, and Neuropsychopharmacology. He is recognised by the Pain Physician Journal as the world’s leading authority on stellate ganglion block research.
He is the author of The Invisible Machine (2023) and The God Shot: Healing Trauma’s Legacy (Post Hill Press / Simon & Schuster, February 2026). Dumb Is Smarter is his most urgent book yet — because the epidemic it describes is happening right now, to everyone, and most people do not yet have a name for what they are experiencing.
